There's a growing Isthmus between: journalism, columnists, bloggers, etc. on the left side…

Social networking, networks, business card exchange, etc. on the other side.

Twitter is an isthmus where the two are meeting, and we don't have social conventions for that yet. People feel a little awkward and confused at first..

they can help each other when something goes wrong

they can work together to do more than they could alone

they can do all that as a part of their everyday lives rather than having to stop and go do it
